This December we are dusting off our Christmas jumpers ready to celebrate Christmas Jumper Day 2021!  

This annual fundraising event is taking place on Friday 10th December this year and we are super keen to get fundraising for this very worthy cause.  Like last year we will be donating £1 from every sale of our Save the Children 'Christmas Hug' Bauble.

These beautiful little baubles are a thoughtful way to send a hug to somebody you are unable to see this Christmas. Personalise with the name or names of who the hug is from to create a sentimental gift to bring a smile to your loved ones face year after year.

If you don't fancy buying a bauble this year (perhaps you already have one from last year!) but would still like to help you can text our special team code TEAMTDBC to 70050 and you will donate £2 to Save The Children.

This year our 'Give Back Friday coincides with the wonderful Holly Tucker's 'Colour Friday' campaign, encouraging people to shop with small businesses on Black Friday, rather than with big companies who can afford to slash prices.

As you may know, for the past few years we have decided to donate a percentage of our sales from the Black Friday weekend to charity. This year we have chosen the very colourful Rainbow Trust who help families with seriously ill children.

From 8pm Thursday 25th - midnight Sunday 28th November, we will donate 10% of each order to Rainbow Trust - both online and in store. We will still be planting a tree for every order online and purchases over £10 in our bricks and mortar store Roam.

This International Men’s Day we are celebrating the life of one of the most inspirational and beloved figures across the UK, Sir David Attenborough!

Grandparents play such a vital role in society and this has been highlighted more than ever during the pandemic as families do the working from home/home schooling juggle! 

Thankfully, technology has meant that families are able to keep in touch with grandparents but sometimes it's nice to be able to reach out and show them just how much you care.

We can’t quite believe we’re half way through 2021 already! Where on earth have the past six months gone?! We hope you are all doing okay and enjoying the extra few slices of freedom we were given last month. 

If you are in need of a positivity boost today, you might like to know that throughout the month of June your orders will be replenishing the essential forests of Bore, in Kenya. As well as this, the local Kenyan farmers will be educated on finding ways to grow new food crops. This will reduce the stress on their existing tropical forest, and mean that the trees will be able to thrive and enhance the all important ecosystems.

Six different species of tree will be planted in the area, including Eucalyptus. Doing this will help squash the deforestation rates, and benefit the 5,000 strong community in a variety of other ways too.

If we do not act now and act fast, our world is going to overheat. We need to protect and conserve the planet’s tropical forests before it’s too late. We are hoping we will at least make a small difference this month, with the help of our reforestation partners and yourselves of course. 💚

🌲 Madagascar May 🌲

Throughout this month, your lovely orders will be planting trees in Madagascar - the fourth largest island in the whole world! Heartbreakingly, it has suffered a severe loss of mangroves and forests over the last few years, meaning the endemic species have lost their habitats.

The island also needs trees to purify water sources, control flooding and erosion, and to help replenish the soil with nutrients for farming. Deforestation here has greatly impacted the farmers’ abilities to grow crops, so they have no option but to move to the overcrowded cities looking for work. They often have to resort to selling themselves or their families into slavery just to survive. 

This reforestation project is hiring the local villagers to plant the trees, giving them a decent income so they can provide for their families again. The project has also transformed how the people relate to their forests - they now look for protection and stewardship, rather than just wood for cooking and construction materials. 

As more and more trees are planted, the healthy forests begin to emerge once again, and all the negative effects of deforestation start to disappear. Replenishing the dry deciduous forests will also create habitats for many endangered species, such as the iconic ring-tailed lemurs (yes…King Julien!) 👑

Happy April! We hope you all had a lovely Easter. April is also the dedicated month to celebrate Earth Day, and the theme for this year is ‘Restore Our Earth.’ One of the most effective ways we can do this, is by replenishing the world’s forests. 

This month your orders are helping to plant trees in India, specifically for the Adivasi Bhatra Tribe. This indigenous community heavily relies on forests for food security and livelihood. They use trees for medicines, fuel, firewood, food and drink, housing materials and food for livestock. The planting of trees in this area will boost the rural economy, and help bring some life back into the community. 

The trees being planted will also include fruit bearing native species. These will improve the overall habitat and fruit abundance for the wildlife, and enhance ecosystems. 

As well as this, a plantation of bamboo will be created, which will act as a bio-fence to guard the crop field, reducing human-wildlife conflict incidences. 

Although every day is Earth Day here at The Drifting Bear HQ, today is the perfect opportunity to really reflect, and make a conscious effort to protect this incredible big ball we all live on.
